Ian McCombie

Ian qualified in 1985 in London and moved to Leeds that same year.
In 1994 Ian and Pauline founded McCombie & Co with just 25 clients,
determined only to concentrate on business law and not to allow the
firm to become a general practice.
Ian has carved out for himself sub-niches within Commercial Litigation
including contracts and supply agreements, shareholder and partnership
disputes, employment law, financial services and insurance law and sports
law. The latter has been aided by Ian’s background in athletics as an
Olympic athlete and Commonweath Games medallist.
Ian has been a committee member of the Leeds Law Society for over 10 years, and is currently serving as its President. He is the editor of the Leeds and Yorkshire Lawyer (with a circulation of over 7000), is one of the Parliamentary Liaison Officers for the Leeds Law Society, and has published numerous articles in his specialist areas.
He regularly competes in running events (up to a full marathon), Triathlons (up to Half Ironman) and other endurance events. He leads the Leeds Law Society’s recently launched charity drive in which over £200,000 is intended to be raised by lawyers in Leeds over the next year. Pauline and Ian have two children, Callum aged 11 and Isabel aged 8.

Pauline and Ian established the firm in July 1994 at 2 Park Square, Leeds.
In 1995 Pauline was admitted as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of
Management, and then made a full member in 1998.
In October 2000, Pauline was awarded her Masters Degree in Law with merit,
her final dissertation being on the future effects that multi-disciplinary
practices might have upon the legal profession.
Personal Interests:
Pauline is a continuing novice golfer and is keen on improving her Spanish.

Azher Quyoom:
Azher trained with a niche litigation practice in London and qualified as a
solicitor in 2001. Following qualification he returned to the North and worked
for leading commercial firm, Carrick Read, in their commercial and insolvency
department.
Azher joined McCombie & Co to carry out Commercial Litigation
and Insolvency work and currently heads up the Insolvency Team.
Azher is a member of the Insolvency Lawyers Association, R3 – the specialist
organisation for recovery professionals, and the Professional Negligence
Lawyers Association.
Azher has a wide range of litigation experience in all main areas of commercial litigation, and particularly specialism in insolvency law.
Azher was recently made an associate at McCombie & Co

Azher enjoys watching and playing football and tennis and has a keen interest in track athletics.

Gary Caplan
garycaplan@mccombie.co.uk
Gary is a senior solicitor and joined the practice as a Consultant to provide
valuable support to our clients in company and commercial work. He has
considerable experience in corporate finance including mergers and
acquisitions, buy-outs and refinancing. Gary also handles a wide range of
general commercial and commercial property work.
Personal Interests:
Fell walking, golf, travelling and Spanish.

Alex Stewart

Alex joined the practice from Eversheds LLP as a Commercial Executive.
Alex studied for her law degree at Sheffield Hallam University and completed
the Legal Practice Course at the college of Law in York. Alex was offered a
training contract at McCombie & Co and qualifies as a solicitor in September
2006.

Alex has recently taken up golf and enjoys going to the gym and skiing.

Qasim Nawaz
Qasim is a qualified mediator for the Centre of Effective Dispute Resolution
(CEDR) and has completed his advocacy portfolio for higher rights
of
audience. At McCombie & Co, his major focus is to be jointly instructed
by parties to resolve their dispute quickly and cost effectively, rather than
by lengthy expensive court proceedings - either by mediating the dispute
or sign posting to the most effective alternative.
Qasim is a commercial litigator by background, with particular focus in Professional Negligence, Company Law and Contract Disputes, Mediation and Advocacy. He trained in London with Lovells and was seconded to John Lewis where he handled all contentious consumer complaints for their department stores and Waitrose supermarkets. Qasim then went on to work in the Commercial Dispute and Resolution team at Hammonds in Leeds before joining McCombies.
Personal Interests:
Qasim recently ran both the London marathon and the Great North Run. He also enjoy cycling and tennis and is currently learning Arabic.

Leon Greenstone

Prior to joining McCombie & Co, Leon qualified in Leeds and ventured to London
for two years, dealing in a wide range of commercial work (both contentious
and non-contentious). He has also worked at a Sports, Media and
Entertainment law firm.
Leon’s main focus of work is Employment, Commercial Litigation and
Sports law.
Leon produced a Booklet and Guide for presentation (and distribution) by a guest speaker at Football Factors Seminar on “The Impact of Human Rights on F.A. Disciplinary Procedures”, including a guide to the new Employment Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures and Disability Discrimination legislation, as from 1 October 2004. This was attended by FA Premier League Clubs and Nationwide Football League Clubs.
Personal Interests:
Leon enjoys playing and watching football, working out in the gym, as well as wining and dining in various city centre venues!
Leon also has a passion for music, he is a singer/songwriter and has been in the rock band Rhythmkicker (winners of Bright Young Things 2001 and 2002 and BBC Live 2002). He has recently been working on a new musical venture!

Rachael Simpson

and qualified in 1997. Whilst there she led the consumer franchise
department in which the firm obtained a legal aid franchise. In 1999
she moved to the Insurance Litigation department of national law firm
DLA where she worked for 4 years. In 2004 Rachael joined McCombie and Co
as a litigator, specialising in commercial litigation and employment work.
Rachel was recently made an associate at McCombie & Co

Rachael has run in the London Marathon and in local fun runs in recent years. She is married with two young children. She enjoys food and foreign travel and speaks passable French and rusty Italian
